Study Permit
NPC College of Arts & Design diploma programs require international students to obtain a study permit. You must apply for your study permit at the Canadian Consulate or Canadian Embassy for your area, before your program starts.
To get a study permit you must provide
The NPC Acceptance Letter
You'll need to present the original acceptance letter from NPC College of Arts & Design and proof of deposit.
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your program.
Be sure to include the NPC’s Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number on your study permit application: O272070464932. Please note, the first digit in the sequence is the letter “O”, and not a zero.
Starting November 8, 2024 you must be enrolled at the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) listed on your study permit. If you plan to change DLIs, you’ll need to get a new study permit by applying to extend your current one. Details may be subject to change as new announcements are released by IRCC. Make sure to check IRCC’s website for the most up to date information.
You may also need to provide the letter of explanation. This letter helps the visa officer to understand you and your goals. This letter should be written entirely by yourself, in your own voice; it should be written from the heart and convey authenticity. As the letter should reflect your current English language proficiency, you should not feel the need to use a translator or other service to fix any potential spelling or grammatical errors.
Your letter should explain:
-
Why you want to study in Canada
-
That you understand your responsibilities as a student
-
How the program you have enrolled in at NPC College of Arts & Design will help you achieve your desired career outcome
-
If you hold a degree in an unrelated field, be honest about your desire to make a career change and explain the reasoning behind this change in full; it is a perfectly acceptable decision to change your career path
You should include this letter if you decide to apply for a study permit, even if you don’t have to get a study permit for your program.
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
As of January 22, 2024, IRCC has announced that most students will need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they plan to study. Find out if you are exempt from needing a PAL.
You can request a PAL as early as 6 months prior to your start date. If your start date is more than 6 months away, please return to this page later.
What is a Study Permit ?
In Canada, foreign nationals planning to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) for more than six months are required to obtain a study permit from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). NPC College of Arts & Design (NPC) is a DLI with the identification number O272070464932 (the first character is the letter ‘O’), which is indicated on all letters issued by NPC College of Arts and Design.
A study permit grants permission to study in Canada for the duration specified in the document. It's important to note that a study permit is not an entry visa; additional visas such as Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) may be required to enter Canada based on nationality. When applying for an initial study permit from outside Canada, IRCC typically issues both the study permit approval and any necessary visa together unless you already have a valid entry visa.
At NPC, a study permit is required to start our full time Diploma programs for international students.
How to Apply for a Study Permit
International students can apply for a study permit from inside (if eligible) or outside Canada. Usually, you must apply for your first study permit before coming to Canada. Some international students, such as citizens of the United States, may be able to apply for a study permit at the Canadian port of entry. Ensure you have the right documents, including proof of financial support and enough time to apply for a study permit before starting your program.
Apply from outside Canada
As of 8:30 am ET on Jan 22, 2024, study permit applications from outside Canada must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory where you plan to study. For VCC students, it is the province of British Columbia. If you apply without a PAL, your application will be returned with fees.
You can apply for a Study Permit from outside Canada:
-
Online, by creating your IRCC Secure Account (recommended), or
-
By paper, send your application to a Visa Application Center (VAC)
We encourage you to review Guide 5269 - Applying for a Study Permit outside Canada for instructions.
